Obviously, it is not needed. (perhaps to an extent) if it were crucial to have it that would mean any woman who has waxed or shaved has somehow detrimentally damaged their 'part'.

It is also a symbol of becoming a women. Metaphorically women who shave are trying to recreate a childlike sense of themselves and men who find shaved women appealing supposedly have a deep psychological issue. I do not beleive this but it is an argument that is out there.
